Galt Credit against four other ways to cover a shortfall.

A single-payment loan, a card cash advance, a bank loan and an earned-wage app all solve the same problem differently. Here is where each one wins.

Figures on this page were checked against Galt Credit’s published state disclosures on . How we source figures

What is the cheapest way to cover a shortfall?

A bank or credit union loan, by a wide margin — many credit unions cap payday alternative loans at 28% APR. Next: a payment plan with the biller, then an existing credit card cash advance, then an earned wage access app. A Galt Credit installment loan at roughly 598% APR sits below all of those on price, and beats only a two-week single-payment loan on structure.

Galt Credit loans vs payday loans and four other options.

More dots is better on every column, including cost — five dots means cheaper. A bank or credit union wins on price and will keep winning if your credit lets you qualify.

Bank or credit union loan

Cheapest on this list, by a wide margin. Personal loan APRs at banks and credit unions run from single digits to around 36%. Many credit unions also offer a payday alternative loan capped at 28% APR, in amounts from $200 to $2,000, to members who have been with them a short while. Membership is often open to anyone living in a county or working for a listed employer.

The trade-offs are a hard credit pull, a real approval bar, and a slower decision — sometimes days rather than hours. If your credit can clear the bar and the bill can wait, this is the answer and nothing else comes close. Ask here first.

Credit card cash advance

If you already hold a card with available credit, an advance is expensive by ordinary standards and cheap compared with this loan. Typical cash advance APRs sit in the high twenties, with a fee of around 3% to 5% of the amount and interest running from day one with no grace period.

It needs no application and no approval if the line is already there. The risk is that it has no fixed end: unlike an installment loan, a revolving balance can sit and accrue for years if you only pay the minimum.

Earned wage access app

The cheapest option for a small gap immediately before payday. You draw against wages already earned, usually $100 to $500, and it comes out of the next cheque. Fees are small or voluntary, though expedited transfer fees and tips can push the effective rate higher than the headline suggests.

It shortens your next paycheck, which is the catch: if the gap was caused by the paycheck being too small already, this moves the problem forward by two weeks rather than solving it.

Two-week single-payment loan

The comparison this product is usually set against. The whole balance plus fees comes out on one date, and when it does not fit, the usual answer is to pay a fee and renew. Fees repeat; the principal does not fall. Most volume in this market comes from renewal sequences rather than one-off loans.

On an annualised basis the cost is broadly comparable with a Galt Credit installment loan. The structure is worse, and the structure is what causes the damage.

Galt Credit installment loan

Where it wins: a fixed end date, payments sized to one pay period, no collateral, no prepayment penalty, a soft credit check rather than a hard pull, and a decision that leans on income and banking rather than a score. For someone whose credit rules out the first two options on this page, those are real advantages.

Where it loses: price. An APR near 598% is dramatically more expensive than a bank loan, a credit union payday alternative or a card advance, and over four to ten months the total finance charge can exceed what a single unrenewed two-week loan would cost. It is a better-structured expensive loan, not a cheap one.

What to do with all that

Work down in order. Ask the biller for a payment plan. Call a credit union. Check an existing card. Check whether your employer offers a hardship advance or earned-wage access. Dial 211 for local utility and rent assistance. If all of those are genuinely closed and the expense cannot wait, then a well-structured installment loan is a defensible last option — taken at the amount you need, on the shortest schedule you can reliably meet, with a plan to pay it off early.

Services

Galt Credit Loans services: what is on offer.

Galt Credit runs one underlying product — a small-dollar installment loan — marketed under several names depending on why you are borrowing. Here is each of them, and what a Galt Credit loan is not.

Online installment loans

The core Galt Credit loan: a fixed amount, fixed equal payments, several months, unsecured. Everything else on this page is a version of it. Full explainer.

Bad credit installment loans

The same Galt Credit loan, decisioned on verified income and bank activity rather than on a credit score, using a soft credit check. What gets checked.

Small-dollar emergency loans

The bottom of the Galt Credit range — $100 to $400 — for a bill that cannot wait a fortnight. Amounts and limits.

Payday loan alternative

Installments across several months instead of one lump sum on your next payday. Same high cost, better structure. How it differs.

No published credit score minimum

There is no published score cut-off. A soft inquiry runs and contributes, but it does not act as the gate. What we check.

Repeat and returning customer loans

A completed Galt Credit loan repaid as agreed raises the ceiling to the state maximum. A new loan is a new agreement, never an automatic rollover.
